Resilient Neighbourhood Walk Series

In 2019, Neighbour Lab hosted a series of resilience walks in collaboration with the City of Vancouver for BC Emergency Preparedness Week. Across four neighbourhoods and over the course of two weekends, we engaged over 90 residents from diverse backgrounds, ages and abilities. Imagining the potential impacts of a 6.5 magnitude crustal earthquake in the unique context of each neighbourhood, the guided walks aimed to educate and to create new connections. Each walk raised awareness about local threats, explored community strengths and opportunities, shared information about existing citywide and community initiatives, and sparked conversations between neighbours around emergency preparedness. Each walk culminated in a block party where participants engaged in a community asset mapping activity, won prizes to go in a ‘grab and go’ emergency kit, and had a chance to connect directly with their neighbours.

"The walks were excellent. The injects from staff from different organizations and volunteers along the way were really inspiring, and it was fascinating to see how each walk took on a different focus."

Lead Resilience Planner & Acting Chief Resilience Officer
